roll the dice to determine soundtracks used in the Grid
I. The Cube (approx 4 min begins with music: Cage Construction 2):
a. begin sequence of accumulated phrases together facing forward/downstage in this order: Lailye-Cynthia-Ilaan-Carmela.
In the sequence, each individual phrase begins a quarter turn left from the beginning facing of the previous phrase, i.e. Lailye phrase begins facing DS, Cynthia's begins facing SL, Ilaan's begins facing US, and Carmela's begins facing SR
In the studies that generated the individual accumulated phrases, each dancer imagined that the kinosphere that surrounds the body is a cube divided equally into 9 three dimensional section. For some of the dancers or studies the cube was be composed of liquid space, or a substance with fluid resistance, for others it was more like a drum.
Study #1: Extend/reach/strike into a section of the cube with one body part, return to center before touching/hitting another section, Notice where you like to move.
Study #2: Perform improvisation #1 for another performer and together select a phrase, or phrases of material that you would like to remember. The watcher can offer the direction to "stop, go back, repeat." Discuss how you like to move.
Study #3: Extend/reach/strike into a section of the cube with one body part, return to center before touching/hitting another section, Notice where you avoid moving and make a conscious effort to explore those areas.
Study #4: Perform improvisation #3 for another performer and together select a phrase, or phrases of material that you would like to remember. The watcher can offer the direction to "stop, go back, repeat." Discuss your moving preferences and evasions.
Each performer teaches the others the phrase that they had accumulated from this process. All performers are allowed to make modifications/variations of the movement to take care of their present condition.
b. 3/4 turn to repeat sequence of four phrases, begin facing stage right:
Lailye & Carmela do Lailye phrase (others turn with phrase and may gently echo some moves-all do final turn)
Cynthia & Lailye do Cynthia phrase (others turn with phrase and may gently echo some moves-all do final suspension moving onto balls of feet)
Ilaan & Cynthia do Ilaan's phrase (others turn with phrase and may gently echo some moves-all do foot initiated turn and "hustle" back up)
Carmela & Ilaan do Carmela's phrase (others turn with phrase and may gently echo some moves-all do hands with first turn and final lean with arms extended)
c. 3/4 turn to repeat sequence with individual variations, begin facing upstage
