About / Bio
l a u t is a digital media collective, consisting of Franziska Schroeder (saxophones) and Pedro Rebelo (composition, digital media)

Franziska is a performer, a theorist and improviser. She is a founder of the digital media collective l a u t and has been awarded her PhD by the School of Arts, Culture and Environment at the University of Edinburgh, UK. In April 2007 Franziska took up a three year AHRC funded Research Fellowship at the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast where she now investigates network performance and virtual environments. Franziska was the Artistic Director for the Roots Ensemble at the ICMC 2008 (International Computer Music Conference).
With her trio FAINT, Franziska has released a double CD (CS088) of Improvised and Electroacoustic Music with Pedro Rebelo (Piano and Instrumental Parasites) and Steven Davis (Drums) on the creative source recordings (www.creativesourcesrec.com). This project was supported by an Arts Council Northern Ireland Grant. Franziska has recently released her second CD on the creative source label.

Pedro is a composer/digital artist working in electroacoustic music, digital media and installation. His approach to music making is informed by the use of improvisation and interdisciplinary structures. He has been involved in several collaborative projects with visual artists and has created a large body of work exploring the relationships between architecture and music in creating interactive performance and installation environments. This includes a series of commissioned pieces for soloists and live-electronics which take as a basis the interpretation of specific acoustic spaces. His electroacoustic music is featured in various CD sets (Sonic Circuits IV, Discontact III, Exploratory Music from Portugal, ARiADA). His audio-visual work "lautomata.3" has recently been awarded the Special Recognition prize from the CynetArt Festival, Dresden.
Pedro conducts research in the field of digital media, interactive sound and composition. His writings reflect his approach to design and composition by articulating creative practice in a wider understanding of cultural theory.
Pedro has been awarded a PhD in composition from the University of Edinburgh and is currently Director of Research at the Sonic Arts Research Centre and Chair of the Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music.
