Score / Notes
Hamadryads are, in Greek mythology, spirits which are bound to particular trees, living only as long as the tree with which they are bonded lives. Here, the title makes specific reference to Josquin’s déploration on the death of Johannes Ockeghem, Nymphes des bois, the material of which, radically slowed down and subjected to successive Pythagorean detunings, lies at the heart of Ἁμαδρυάδες. This is the central part of a triptych of three pieces, based on a sequence on lamentations from the long fifteenth century: the first, tu as navré, was based on Ockeghem’s Mort, tu as navré de ton dart, written on the death of Gilles de Bin, called Binchois, and was written for Ensemble SurPlus; the third will be based on material drawn from Gombert’s Musae iovis, written after the death of Josquin. I am grateful to Trevor Bača, without whose advice and assistance the preparatory work for Ἁμαδρυάδες would not have been possible.

Ἁμαδρυάδες was written for ekmeles and was premiered by them at The Tank, New York City, on 11 January 2011.
