Second Skin With Lungs
Description
Keywords: percussion, text score
Materials / Instrumentation / Performers
Score / Notes
Performers are arranged in a circle surrounding the audience. Drums should have a clear, definite fundamental pitch (with the exception of the bass drum which should be low and sonorous). Clear plastic and/or “black dot” heads should not be used.
For the duration of the piece all performers gently rub the drum head with the tips of fingers of one hand, imitating as closely as possible the sound profile of the silence in the space. This action is performed as quietly as possible with each player still audible to the entire audience.
The piece is performed in sections of three minutes. Within each section the performers may play a long roll (not to exceed 60 seconds) with very soft mallets. The dynamic is quiet but the sound should be full and present.
Within each section any performer may choose to play a single strike of his/her drum. No single performer may do this more than once per section.
